Richard de Clare "Strongbow" 2nd Earl of Pembroke born 1130 led the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland 1169 in the reign of Henry II married 1171 to Aoife Mac Murrough Princess of Leinster descendant of Brian Boru in 1172 he and his wife's uncle Archbishop Laurence O'Toole started the re-building in stone of Christ Church Cathedral Dublin.

The O'Carroll of Ely principality in the centre of Ireland in King's County was situated in the ancient province of Munster on the borders of Queen's County and the Lord Marshal of Leinster estates. During the civil wars in Ireland William Marshal Lord of Leinster had taken two manors that the Bishop of Ferns claimed but could not get back some years after William's death the Bishop is said to have laid a curse on the family that William's sons would have no children and the great Marshal estates would be scattered each of Lord William Marshal's sons did become the Earl of Pembroke and the Marshal of England but each died without issue. Henry III King of England attended a Temple Church London service to pray for the life of William Marshal the greatest Knight that ever lived.

Ronald Hoffman is a professor of history and the director of the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture at the College of William and Mary. As the symposia director of the U. S. Capitol Historical Society from 1977-1993 he coedited the 15-book series Perspectives on the American Revolution. His Princes of Ireland, Planters of Maryland: A Carroll Saga, 1500–1782 (2000), written in collaboration with Sally D.
